Sacramento – More than a hundred area residents attended a free citizenship fair on Saturday in Norwalk hosted by Senator Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia), along with the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, Cerritos College, National Association of Latino Elected Officials Education Fund, Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF) and the Council of Mexican Federations (COFEM).

“The citizenship fair provided area residents with information as well as assistance completing their documentation for citizenship,” said Senator Tony Mendoza.

Nationwide, there are 8.8 million lawful permanent residents who are eligible to become U.S. citizens but have not applied or finished the citizenship process. Of those, nearly half—more than 4 million—are Latino. California has more than 2.4 million permanent residents.

Most lawful permanent residents who are at least 18 years of age are eligible to apply for citizenship after meeting certain requirements which include 5 years of lawful permanent residence in the United States, or 3 years for those married to a United States citizen and successful completion of English language, civics, and history tests. Additionally, lawful immigrant children under 18 years of age may automatically acquire citizenship when a parent naturalizes.

“I want to thank my partners in this successful event including the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, Cerritos College, the National Association of Latino Elected Officials Education Fund, Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF) and the Council of Mexican Federations (COFEM),” added Senator Tony Mendoza.
