SACRAMENTO – Today, Senator Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia) was appointed as the Chair of the newly formed Committee on Insurance, Banking, and Financial Institutions by the Senate Committee on Rules. Effective May 18, the newly formed committee will replace the Committees on Insurance and Banking & Financial Institutions.

A measure to make California county governments more representative, accessible, and accountable to the populations that they serve was introduced today by Senator Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia).

“Accountability and transparency are critical to the functioning of government, be it at the state, local, or federal levels,” Senator Mendoza said. “It has been over one hundred and fifty years since the county system of government was introduced. California, especially Southern California, has changed so dramatically and it is imperative to adjust how a Board of Supervisors is structured for large, urban counties.”

The dilemma is not just in L.A. California is so blue that the statewide route is clogged with ambitious politicians.

Late Thursday came potentially upbeat news for some on the state’s deep bench: Legislation that would create one of the most powerful elected positions in California – county executive of Los Angeles.

A group of nine state lawmakers on Thursday introduced a bill that would seek to improve representation of people of color on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors by expanding it from five to seven members and creating a position of an elected county executive.

State Sen. Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia) is the lead author on the legislation that would put the matter of changing the state Constitution to a vote on the California ballot in June 2018.

CERRITOS – Senator Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia) hosted a commemoration for Hun Joon “Paul” Lee. Paul Lee was the inspiration for the Paul Lee School Bus Safety Law, which requires safety measures for all school buses in the state of California.

Senator Mendoza met with Paul’s family and presented them with a framed copy of the Law. The family and the Senator spoke on several issues and shared memories of Paul.

NORWALK – Senator Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia) will be attending & participating in The Young Latinas Empowerment Conference on March 24, 2017. This event will pair young Latinas with Latina political figures for empowerment, learning opportunities, and mentorship. Students selected to participate are juniors from high schools throughout the 32nd Senate District.

Senator Mendoza, along with other public representatives, will be serving food and drinks during the luncheon.
