Tragic Death of Whittier Special Needs Student Focus of Legislation

Sacramento – In response to the arrest yesterday of the bus driver involved in the tragic death of special needs student Hun-Joon “Paul” Lee of Whittier, Senator Mendoza (D-Artesia) issued the following statement:

“First, I want to express again my heartfelt condolences to the parents, family and friends of Hun-Joon “Paul” Lee.  His death was a shock to everyone in the community.

“I commend the work of the local authorities who have expeditiously investigated the circumstances surrounding his death.

In May 2015, Mendoza announced the launch of the 32nd Senate District Young Senators Leadership Program [YSLP]. The program was an extension of his previous course, Young Legislators, building on the program that was created when he served in the State Assembly from 2006-12. Each month of May recruiting begins and the program runs from August of the senior year to graduation.

Mendoza was seeking applicants from local high school juniors and seniors who were interested in public service.

SCR 110 by Senator Tony Mendoza

Sacramento - The State Senate today approved Senate Concurrent Resolution 110 authored by Senator Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia) on a unanimous bipartisan vote.  The resolution designates March of 2016 and each year thereafter as Brain Injury Awareness Treatment and Prevention Month in order to promote public awareness on the extent, causes, consequences, treatment, and prevention of traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Approved Today by the Joint Legislative Audit Committee

Sacramento – The Joint Legislative Audit Committee (JLAC) today approved an audit request by Senator Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia) on a unanimous, bipartisan vote of 11 to 0 vote. The audit will determine whether California’s K-12 schools are providing statutorily-required library services to the state’s school children, and if those services are being provided by fully-trained, credentialed teacher librarians.

The State Senate recognized the contributions of California’s Pakistani-American community by adopting Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) 105 by Senator Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia), declaring March 23, 2016 as Pakistani American Day. A special ceremony held on the Senate floor following the vote featured the Consul General of Pakistan, Abdul Jabbar Memon, and Artesia Mayor Pro-Tem Ali Sajjad Taj, and Pakistani American dignitaries from throughout the state.

On March 4, 2016, Dr. Mary Sieu, Superintendent of the ABC Unified School District was honored as the 32nd Senate District 2016 Woman of the Year in the area of Education. State Senator Tony Mendoza recognized eight prominent women who made outstanding contributions in their fields and are community leaders in the 32nd Senate District. The other women recognized included Ani Samuelian, Vinita Vineet, Rebecca Cline, Carmen Miller, Sergeant Maria Ingram, Brenda Sandoval and Dr. Nina Smart. The keynote speaker for the event was Congresswoman Janice Hahn from District 44.
