Sacramento, CA – A state senator who formerly taught elementary school has introduced a bill that proposes to deal much harsher sentences for drug traffickers who manufacture or sell drugs near schools.

Sacramento-In an effort to crack down on the manufacturing and sale of illicit drugs near schools, Senator Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia) a former elementary school teacher, introduced SB 212 today, which strengthens the punishment for drug trafficking and manufacturing near schools. The bill would expand the Juvenile Drug Trafficking & School Yard Act of 1988 to include private property. The Act is intended to protect children when drug crimes take place near schools.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – For the first time in California history, the state Senate and state Assembly adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 3 by Senator Tony Mendoza declaring Jan. 26 as “India Republic Day” and recognizing the contributions of the Indian American community to California.

A special ceremony was held on the Senate floor following the vote, featuring the Indian consul general in San Francisco and Indian American dignitaries from throughout the state.

A reception featuring the Republic of India Consul General, honored guests and dignitaries will be held at 1:00 p.m. preceding the ceremony in Room 211of the State Capitol.
